Inspired by Elizabeth Goddard and Content by Seema, the ClickUp API Learn Along is a live Google Doc where you can watch me work through building my first custom automation in real-time.

As a systems and workflow strategist for solo(ish) entrepreneurs, I've been building no-code automations for years. Tools like Zapier, Make, and Automate.io have made it increasingly easy to automate your business without having any background in programming. But... They can't do everything.

I'm working with a client to find a way to automatically create 40+ dynamic tasks in ClickUp every month. Data needs to change in these tasks depending on the client and time, which takes our beloved no-code options out of the running.

You're invited to leave the trial-and-error to me as you watch me work and figure out the hard parts for you.

Over the next few weeks, I'll be diligently tracking my every move as I try to wrangle ClickUp's API.

Never used an API yourself? Don't worry -- me neither. That's why I'm trying this experiment. Despite several years of building no-code automations, I have yet to venture into the scary world of JSON objects and Python to create custom solutions for clients.

How This Works:

Every day that I work on this project, the Google Doc will be opened beside me. I'll add all of my meticulous notes as I experiment and work on building this automation, including errors I receive (so you can quickly search if / when you build something similar) and a quick view of what works. You'll get access to the Google Doc immediately, where you can see Day 01. Each day will have:

What do you mean by "learn along"?

Since I don't have API experience, you'll be watching me figure it in real time and, hopefully, learn about them for yourself. This is a version of "learning in public", so you get to see the behind-the-scenes of systems building rather than just the finished product.

Do I need to be a ClickUp user to buy this?

This document is specifically about ClickUp's API. You may find value if you're looking to automate other tools, but any working code I provide will not be applicable to other software. (So, basically, yes, you should be a ClickUp user.)

Do I need any coding knowledge to use this?

Absolutely not. I have some coding knowledge (i.e, I know the basic terms and functions of coding), but no coding experience. We'll be learning together!

What exactly will you be building?

I am building an automation that will create 40+ tasks each month in different ClickUp locations and for different clients. The automation will need to dynamically find the correct location and templates, and dynamically update task titles based on the month.

How long will this go on for?

I'm not sure! The hope is that it will only take two weeks, but since this is a new realm for me, it may last longer.

What happens if you can't actually finish the automation?

Well, that would be bad news for me. If I can't figure it out on my own, I'll bring in some of my developer friends for support. If there's a reason the automation can't be created (like, there's an actual software limitation), you'll be able to follow along as I come up with a different solution. (We don't give up around here!)

What if I don't end up liking the Learn Along?
